Social Activities Programme

The following is a list of activities that take place on our leisure programme, either as part of our escorted excursions, or in the afternoons and evenings. There are no extra costs for Teenagers, High Fliers, Tweens or Juniors for these. Adults pay a small extra fee if they wish to join Saturday excursions and some weekday options. All entrance fees are included.

  • Tennis (courts next to the School)
  • Theatre (adults only)
  • Skittles evening at local pub (adults only)
  • Exeter night-club visit (adults only)
  • Disco (SIS students only) at Sidmouth night-club
  • Ten-pin bowling
  • Quasar
  • Golf - Driving range, pitch & putt and mini-golf
  • Swimming - in local pools and sea
  • Arts & crafts sessions
  • Quiz nights (adults only)
  • Beach games
  • Temporary membership of the town library, which is next to the School

The following sports options are available on request at extra cost:

  • Golf lessons with PGA professional, and green fees at many local golf courses
  • Tennis lessons with LTA professional
  • Sailing & windsurfing lessons with RYA instructors (must book in advance)
  • Horse-riding, pony-trekking and riding lessons at BHS-approved school
  • Flying and gliding (adults only)

TEENAGE EXCURSIONS

Every Thursday (13.30-18.00) and all day on Saturday (09.30-18.00)
Travel by coach to the following destinations escorted by our staff - 1 leader to every 15 students.

Most of these locations have recreational facilities which students can enjoy - swimming, ice-skating, ten-pin bowling, quasar, etc.

Exeter
Roman city with university, historical cathedral and Guildhall, excellent shopping centre, river and canal, visitors' centre on the quayside.

Bristol
A major city and port, once the largest city in England. Historical docks, famous ships, iron suspension bridge, zoo, large shopping centre, beautiful cathedral.

Dartmoor and Buckfastleigh
A scenic and beautiful National Park with wild horses, good walking, visitors' centre.
Buckfastleigh Abbey is famous for its honey and tonic made by Benedictine monks.

Totnes and Dartmouth
Totnes is a small town famous for its crafts, with boat trips along the beautiful River Dart to Dartmouth and its castle.

Bath
Historical spa city with Abbey, museums, exclusive shops, Roman Baths and ruins, famous Pump Room where students can drink the healing water.

Wookey, Wells and Street
Wookey Hole Caves and Papermill - students can explore the amazing caves, and make their own paper at the mill. Wells is England's smallest city but has a beautiful Cathedral, and Bishop's Palace surrounded by a moat. Street is well-known for its shoe factories and discounted designer clothes stores.

Plymouth
A modern city with excellent shops, Plymouth has the largest naval docks in Europe. Students can take boat trips around the harbour, see frigates, submarines and destroyers, and visit the Dome visitors' centre which tells the history of the city, and the National Marine Aquarium.

Exmoor and Dunster Castle
Situated on the edge of the beautiful Exmoor National Park, Dunster is an unspoilt medieval village with a large restored castle overlooking the Bristol Channel.

Stonehenge and Salisbury
Stonehenge is a world-famous ring of standing stones which date back 5000 years, a place of pagan worship. Salisbury has a magnificent cathedral containing Europe's oldest working clock and ancient documents.

LONDON
We organise regular excursions to London, escorted by Sidmouth International School leaders.
One-day trip on Saturday, return travel by train giving 7 hours in London.
Open-top bus sightseeing tour included £40 per person.

JUNIOR EXCURSIONS

Every Thursday (13.30-18.00) and all day on Saturday (10.00-18.00)

Lyme Regis
A small fishing port, famous for its fossils. Students can visit Fossil World and Dinosaur Land, and look for their own fossils on the beach.

Plymouth
The Dome - Time-walk from the 16th century, telling students about the history of Plymouth with its large naval base.
National Marine Aquarium - An important new aquarium, where students can listen and talk to experts on guided tours, learn about conservation, feed the sharks etc.

Morwhellham Quay, Tavistock
An award-winning visitor centre. An ancient centre for shipping silver, tin and copper, now a restored riverside village where guides dress in historic costume and give the students guided walks and talks.

Cricket St Thomas, Chard
A wildlife park where students can see wild animals in natural settings. Adventure areas, train and water rides, sea lion shows, elephants, tigers, etc.

Observatory, Sidmouth
Planetarium and weather centre, radio centre, star and sun tracking.

Crealy Adventure Park
A country park and farm with activities, animals, nature trails and adventure playgrounds.

River Dart Country Park
An outdoor activity centre set on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in the beautiful River Dart valley.

Quaywest, Torquay
An exciting water park, for an afternoon of wet activities!

Woodlands Leisure Park, Dartmouth
Animals, action and a beautiful park provide an excellent afternoon's entertainment followed by a visit to the historical town of Dartmouth.

Wookey Hole Caves and Papermill
Students can explore the amazing caves and make their own paper at the mill. On the way home, they can shop at Street with its special discount stores.

Paignton Zoo
A wildlife conservation centre for the study of animals and endangered species. Shopping at nearby Torquay on the way home.
